Crosswalk Systems

In-Road Crosswalk Lights

Since 2000, LaneLight has been providing A Safer Way Home with our in-road, flashing pedestrian crosswalk systems. LaneLights alert the driver without adding roadside clutter and are very effective in applications such as mid-block crosswalks, roundabouts, and school zones. Powered by either solar or AC configurations and activated through a number of means, such as a pushbutton, passive/movement activation, scheduled activation or through integration with existing traffic systems.

LaneLights are daytime visible up to 3000 feet, MUTCD compliant, bicycle safe, near-zero maintenance and snowplow safe with the flush installation option.

Applications

  • Excellent for mid-block crosswalks
  • High volume crosswalks
  • School zones
  • High speed roadways

The Effects of Tunnel Vision

Tunnel vision is an effect that is especially prevalent with distracted drivers. Peripheral vision is greatly reduced, causing traditional traffic safety systems such as stop signs, crosswalk signs, traffic lights or overhead mast arms to be highly ineffective. Drivers only see what is in the centre of their vision, which can be especially hazardous in the case of a pedestrian crosswalk.

There are many reasons to install an LED enhanced crosswalk, but targeting the attention of drivers affected by tunnel vision is one of the most important. Where traditional warning systems fail, in-road warning lights installed in crosswalks remain the only warning system that stays in the driver’s field of view.

In-Road Warning Lights Demo

LaneLight crosswalk systems flash a barrier of daytime visible LEDs directly in the driver’s line of sight, making the crosswalk dramatically more visible than it would be with roadside beacons, RRFBs, or static signs. Our in-road systems are engineered to survive in the toughest road conditions, are snow-plow safe and come with a 5-year warranty.

RRFB – Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons

Ideal for Pedestrian and School Zone crosswalks, LaneLight RRFB flashing crosswalk systems feature large 7″ x 3″ LED arrays that meet or exceed FHWA / MUTCD requirements for uncontrolled mid block crosswalk warning systems. RRFB studies show much higher rates of motorist compliance (up to 96 percent) in comparison to round beacon systems or non illuminated painted crosswalk lines.

When activated, the SAE J595 certified LED arrays flash an FHWA approved alternating ‘wig-wag’ pattern. Side-mounted LED arrays flash simultaneously to advise pedestrians that the RRFB’s have been activated and are visible to drivers approaching the crosswalk.

Applications

  • Mid-block crosswalks
  • High volume crosswalks
  • School zones
  • Low-visibility areas

Multiple Crosswalk Systems

One crosswalk safety system is great at reducing pedestrian traffic risk, but combining multiple solutions is excellent. RRFB light bars can be easily combined with our state-of-the-art LaneLight in-road systems to produce a dramatically enhanced system.

When you have a combination of multiple hazards, such as a high-speed, mid-block, multi-lane crosswalk in an area of high foot traffic, using multiple traffic safety options will yield even better results. Many of our customers opt for mixing of in-road warning lights with an LED enhanced sign, RRFB or all three.

RRFB + IRWL Hybrid Demo

This video illustrates the potential when combining a set of rectangular rapid flashing beacons with a row of in-road warning lights. Notice how the lights flash in unison in an FHWA wig-wag pattern. The wall of light instantly catches the attention of drivers whether they are looking directly ahead, at roadside signage or at the pedestrians waiting to cross.

HAWK Beacons

HAWK (high-intensity activated crosswalk beacon) systems are designed to alert drivers of marked crosswalks. Installation of a HAWK system has been shown to reduce pedestrian-related crashes by up to 69%.

The HAWK system looks similar to a railroad crossing, with all the lights remaining dark when there are no pedestrians waiting to cross. Once the system is activated by a pedestrian via a touch button, the bottom beacon turns to a flashing yellow light, then solid yellow, indicating drivers to prepare to stop. This yellow bottom beacon will turn off, while the top two beacons turn to a solid red, indicating that the driver must come to a complete stop. Finally, both top beacons will alternately flash red, indicating that the driver has permission to proceed through the crosswalk if it is clear.

From the pedestrian’s point of view, the HAWK crosswalk system functions the same way as a traditional signal-controlled crossing, using walk or don’t walk symbols on both sides of the crosswalk, facing the pedestrians.

Applications

  • High speed roadways
  • Mid-block crosswalks
  • High volume crosswalks
  • School zones

5-Year Warranty

Our commitment to quality allows LaneLight warning systems to be backed by a full 5-year warranty (normal wear and tear included) and have a projected service life of up to 15 years, depending on operational conditions. Our 5-year warranty includes installations in snowfall regions where LaneLight in-road systems are installed just below grade so they never come into contact with snow-plow blades.
