Something positive has recently unfolded here in Langford, showcasing the impact of local businesses prioritizing community well-being and environmental consciousness. On April 17th, 2025, LaneLight Traffic Technologies Inc., in a commendable collaboration with Tran Sign 2022 Ltd., took a significant step towards enhancing safety in our community.

A new, advanced pedestrian crossing system, featuring RRFBs (Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacons), has been installed adjacent the Royal Canadian Legion on Station Avenue, at the crosswalk connecting the Legion parking lots. This isn’t just an ordinary crosswalk; it represents a thoughtful approach to engineering with a clear focus on pedestrian safety.

It’s worth noting the considered design of this Canadian-made (Saanich) system. Utilizing solar power demonstrates a commitment to clean, renewable energy. A top of pole control cabinet incorporates high-efficiency, long life lithium-iron batteries, reflecting a smart choice for both performance and environmental responsibility, moving away from outdated lead-acid battery options, typically used in this sort of system until now.

For those using the crossing, the user experience has been carefully considered. A robust Polara TM “Bulldog” push button with audible feedback ensures clear activation. Enhanced visibility is achieved through BC MOT-compliant reflective signs, and the LED light bars provide exceptional brightness with emergency vehicle type flashers. When activated, the lights flash in the pulsing RRFB pattern, accompanied by simultaneous side flashes to indicate clearly to pedestrians that the system is active.

Furthermore, this locally manufactured system benefits from cloud-based monitoring and management. This technology allows for real-time oversight of its operation, battery status, frequency of use, and performance. Adjustments to settings can also be made remotely, streamlining maintenance and ensuring optimal functionality without the need for physical site visits.

The installation of this safer crosswalk is expected to provide significant benefits to the members of the Royal Canadian Legion, their families, friends, and the wider Langford community who navigate this increasingly busy road.

This initiative underscores the dedication of LaneLight Traffic Technologies Inc. and TranSign 2022 Ltd. to prioritizing public safety and their belief in creating safer environments. Recognizing the growing challenge of distracted driving, their focus on implementing intelligent systems aims to improve driver awareness and ultimately contribute to the prevention of dangerous situations.

This new crosswalk stands as a strong example of community-focused collaboration and a commitment to both safety and environmental stewardship by the City of Langford. It highlights the positive outcomes that can be achieved when local businesses such as LaneLight and Tran Sign work together with municipalities with these important values in mind.
